Supporting every child’s learning and development in the Early Years Foundation Stage

-Harrow's guide to the early years foundation stage curriculum

Back to our home page

The purpose of this guide is to support practitioners in implementing the aims and requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS.) It can also be shared with parents, carers and families when informing them about the requirements of the EYFS, for example by organising a curriculum event. When using it, practitioners may choose to invite parents, carers and families to play and work with equipment in your learning environment and to think about their children’s learning in your setting and at home.

It is in seven sections and comprises of some 130 pages. Six of the sections are covering the national areas of learning, and comes in a 'customised' ring binder.

Using the guide:

• The guide is intended for use by practitioners from a range of settings – childminders, pre-schools, nurseries, independent schools, nursery classes, reception classes and out of school care schemes.

• It is a working document that practitioners can add to, inserting their own ideas and resources as appropriate for the children in their setting.

• It is a reference document and some information is repeated several times in different aspects of the areas of Learning and Development, so that practitioners may refer to one aspect at a time rather than read the whole guide.

• It is inclusive, recognising and valuing all aspects of diversity.

• It starting point is the Development Matters column of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Practice Guidance for each area and aspect of learning and Development.

• It supports practitioners in using their observations of children to plan for the next steps in their learning, indoors and outdoors.

• It offers practical ideas to enhance the learning environment with appropriate resources and experiences.
